KIN × Malt Donkey brings together two producers from South Australia’s Lower Eyre Peninsula: KIN, known for premium Southern Bluefin Tuna, and Malt Donkey, a small-batch producer of handcrafted ale.
Created specifically to accompany KIN’s tuna, including its prized Otoro, the highly limited 500 mL ale required packaging that could communicate rarity, provenance and occasion without relying on familiar craft-beer conventions.
StudioBand® was engaged to develop the product positioning, verbal identity and packaging system. The idea was deliberately simple: present beer with the posture of champagne.
Dark glass, a unique cork closure, restrained typography, gold detailing and a presentation box shift the ale into a more ceremonial space. The packaging borrows selectively from fine wine and champagne, using materiality and restraint to signal quality rather than relying on decoration.
Grounded in the shared landscape of the Lower Eyre Peninsula through the line Perfectly Wild, the result is a distinctive product that connects land, sea, craft and place.

The 500 mL dark-glass bottle deliberately borrows from the language of champagne and fine wine. A unique cork closure creates a sense of ritual, while gold detailing and restrained typography introduce refinement without excess. Together, these elements shift the product away from familiar craft-beer conventions and establish a more ceremonial, premium presence.

At $35 for a 500 mL bottle, KIN × Malt Donkey could not behave like an ordinary craft beer. The packaging needed to make the price and proposition feel credible before the product was opened.
Rather than looking within the beer category for inspiration, we borrowed visual and behavioural cues from champagne and fine wine.
The dark-glass bottle introduces weight and presence, while the unique cork closure changes the ritual of opening the product. Gold detailing adds refinement and the presentation box positions the bottle as something to gift, share or collect.
Typography and product information were intentionally restrained. By removing unnecessary visual noise, each material, finish and word carries greater weight.
The intention was never to disguise beer as wine. It was to reframe how the product should be handled, served and valued.
The strongest connection between KIN and Malt Donkey was not invented through the collaboration. It already existed in the landscape.
Both producers are shaped by South Australia’s Lower Eyre Peninsula, connecting Southern Bluefin Tuna, grain, coastline and local production through a shared sense of place.
The line Perfectly Wild gave that provenance a concise expression.
Rather than over explaining the origin story, the verbal identity allows the location and product pairing to do the work. It gives the packaging a sense of confidence while reinforcing the relationship between land and sea.
Combined with the restrained visual language, Perfectly Wild helps position the ale as something distinctly regional, premium and unconventional.

Perfectly Wild connects the two collaborators through their shared Lower Eyre Peninsula provenance. Southern Bluefin Tuna, grain, coastline and local craft come together through one concise idea, allowing the packaging to communicate place without relying on a lengthy origin story.

KIN × Malt Donkey became a product that felt intentionally removed from conventional beer packaging.
The combination of dark glass, cork, restrained typography, gold detailing and gift-box presentation created a more ceremonial experience around the ale, changing how it could be perceived, handled and shared.
The packaging also gave the collaboration a strong physical presence. It could sit comfortably alongside premium Southern Bluefin Tuna, function as a gift and retain enough intrigue to feel collectible.
By borrowing selectively from another category while remaining grounded in genuine provenance, the final system created a productive tension between beer and prestige wine.
Premium without pretence. Distinctive without excess. A limited-edition ale shaped as much by place and ritual as by what is inside the bottle.
